Roundtable Focuses on Staying Competitive in Global Medical Device Marketplace

WARWICK, R.I.—Medical product manufacturers face an array of stiff challenges—including unforgiving standards for quality and precision—in their quest to bring new products to market. What can companies do to remain competitive in what has become a global medical device marketplace? ATW Companies Inc., a Warwick, R.I.-based provider of custom-manufactured metal components and services, hosted a roundtable discussion specifically devoted to the issue at the Medical Product Outsourcing (MPO) Symposium East 2009 conference, held last fall in Waltham, Massachusetts. ATW Companies is the parent company of A. T. Wall Company, located in Warwick, R.I.; Judson A. Smith Company, located in Boyertown, Pa.; and Parmatech Corporation, located in Petaluma, California.

The roundtable discussion, which focused on the most critical manufacturing decisions faced by medical device companies, featured an informal setting that facilitated sharing among a wide range of companies involved in medical outsourcing. One of the key issues discussed was the advantages that small and medium-sized companies can gain by integrating as part of a parent company that can, as a result, offer a broader range of capabilities.

“This is an issue that the sister companies within ATW have faced,” commented John Shields, director of sales and marketing at Judson Smith. “We are all in different areas of metal fabrication, with independent expertise. We’ve worked hard to integrate our offerings, leveraging the strengths of all the companies, and taking advantage of what each does well. We now have engineers working together, even sharing what were formerly considered industry trade secrets, enhancing our capabilities and making us a better choice as a vendor.”

ATW Companies (www.atwcompanies.com) offers diverse fabrication services at its technologically advanced manufacturing facilities in California, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. Collectively, the company’s contract manufacturing capabilities include machined parts, sidewall frames, precision metal tubing, stamped metal parts, and MIM components. ATW Companies serves customers worldwide, providing highly engineered, fabricated metal components to a variety of industries in addition to medical devices.
