Online Resources Inc., a company that helps firms solve manufacturing challenges with emerging technologies, helped a customer with challenging automotive measurements.

Online Resources’ goal is to elevate its customers’ capabilities through innovation, experience, and service. The company describes itself as Online Resources is a leading solutions firm in the CAD/CAM industries as well as in 3D Printing and 3D Scanning.

“We use our technology to help with historical recreations of parts that no longer exist,” wrote J.D. Schaumberg, president of Online Resources, in an emailed response to a D2P Survey. “We can reverse engineer to design intent of a part and have it manufactured to a higher accuracy and faster turn time than competitors. This, in turn, leads to more reliable parts that are more precise and more efficient to produce, leading to a lower cost.”

Online Resources (www.onlineresourcesinc.com/) was founded in 1991 by Jay and Tina Schaumberg as a software firm assisting manufacturers with programming challenges related to milling machines. Industries served include aerospace, automotive, medical, and cultural and heritage for museums and libraries, among others.

One of the company’s recent successes was helping IndyCar and NHRA solve challenges in two months that the customer had worked on without success for two years.

The specialties at Online Resources, Inc., include CAD/CAM, 3D scanning, reverse engineering, inspection, and quality control.

“We utilize CAD/CAM software, inspection software, and reverse engineering software to solve the customers’ needs,” J.D. Schaumberg continued. “With the onset of the different aero kits for IndyCar, they found that they had no way to accurately measure the cars. We worked with them to develop a process to scan the cars, run inspection reports in 8 to 10 minutes per car with worst case tolerances of 0.005 inch (five thousandths of an inch) over the whole car. This allowed us to inspect 10-50 million points depending on IndyCar’s need. We are a leader in the industry for our knowledge of manufacturing processes. When the engineer needs help, they call us.”

IndyCar is the sanctioning body for open wheel racing in the United States, and is known for helping establish the Verizon IndyCar Series starting in 1994. The NHRA is the National Hot Rod Association.
