Linear Systems’ packages are said to enable designers to meet demands of space-sensitive applications

FREMONT, Calif.—Semiconductor manufacturer Linear Integrated Systems, Inc., has expanded its product line to include high-performance, discrete, small-signal parts in Dual-Flat No-Leads packages (DFN), the company said in a release.

The package has a reduced circuit board footprint, enabling designers who had previously used SOT-23 packaged parts to meet the demands of space-sensitive applications. Because the DFN has no leads and shorter bond wire lengths, it is said to provide a higher electrical performance than leaded packages due to less inductance.

“These components are the key building blocks for sensor, audio, and other front-end signal chains,” Linear Systems President Timothy S. McCune said in the release. “Providing them in DFN packages enables designers to put them into a wider ranges of world-class applications.”

According to the manufacturer, sensor customers who currently support extreme space-sensitive requirements—with bare die—can upgrade to this package, which the company described as “super tiny,” with a 2mm by 2mm, 8-pin footprint. They can thereby reduce the cost and complexity of installing and wire bonding die in their circuits. Also, the absence of prohibitive wire bonding and die attach issues makes it easier to rework circuits containing the DFN package, the company said.

The DFN package provides improved power dissipation over the SC70/SOT-23 package and, as a non-magnetic package, is suitable for medical or other applications requiring non-magnetic parts, the company said. Besides medical, applications are reported to include audio, detectors, instrumentation, sensors, and test and measurement.

Linear Systems said that it provides several parts in the DFN package, including its 174 Series-P  Channel JFET Switch; 4391 Series-Low Noise, N-Channel JFET Switch; and LS26VPS–Single, P-Channel Voltage Controlled Resistor. It also provides the LS26VNS–Single, N-Channel Voltage Controlled Resistor and the PAD Series-Single, Low Leakage Pico-Amp Diode.
