SANTA CLARA, Calif.—A new splitter switch from Splitvolt is reported to simplify EV home charging while making it faster, safer, and more affordable.
The Splitvolt Splitter Switch™ is a next-generation charging product that includes cETLus safety certification, new components, and a more stylized look. By enabling users to automatically share an existing 30 amp dryer circuit, it can potentially save EV purchasers “thousands of dollars,” Splitvolt said in a release.
Instead of installing a new circuit to charge an EV at home, users can automatically share an existing 30 amp dryer circuit. This eliminates the cost, complexity, and time associated with having an electrician install an additional 220-240 volt Level 2 charging circuit. Within minutes, users “can easily get seven times faster home charging,” the company said in the release.
The Splitter Switch offers built-in intelligence that is said to enable seamless power switching between the dryer and EV. It also includes several critical and unique safety features, according to Splitvolt.
“One of the barriers to EV adoption has been convenient and affordable home charging. Normally, it takes weeks of time, permits, and costs thousands of dollars to have a new dedicated EV circuit installed,” said Dan Liddle, founder and CEO of Splitvolt, in the release. “The Splitvolt Splitter Switch avoids all of that hassle, is much safer, and costs a fraction of the price. Just plug it in, and you immediately have 220v–240v Level 2, fast home charging.”
The new product includes an internal safety circuit breaker, which is said to ensure that the EV charger doesn’t exceed maximum National Electrical Code (NEC) safe-charging limits or stress electrical wiring. A manual override power-off switch provides an additional layer of protection, the company said.
