AGY and Orion Compounding co-developed an advanced Nylon PA 12 reinforced with AGY’s S2 glass fiber.
AIKEN, S.C.—A new material co-developed by AGY and Orion Compounding—a next-generation Nylon PA 12 reinforced with AGY’s S2 Glass fiber—is reported to provide a unique combination of strength, toughness, and processing versatility.
AGY is a U.S. manufacturer of high-performance glass fiber reinforcements; Orion Compounding, a designer and manufacturer of custom-engineered thermoplastic compounds.
The collaboration between the two companies combines the benefits of AGY’s S2 Glass fiber with Orion’s compounding expertise to address growing demand for high-performance thermoplastics across aerospace, automotive, electronics, and medical device markets, according to a joint release by the companies.
“The result is a reinforced PA 12 compound that significantly enhances mechanical performance while maintaining the lightweight processing benefits of nylon resins,” the release stated.
Key performance enhancements of the S2 Glass fiber PA 12 are reported to include up to a 15 percent increase in tensile strength, greater than 13 percent improvement in tensile and flexural modulus, and more than 23 percent increase in elongation at break. The material is also said to provide a greater than 25 percent improvement in impact strength, along with the capability to produce transparent and translucent parts in PA 12.
“This co-development with Orion underscores AGY’s commitment to advancing the performance of engineering thermoplastics,” said Patrick Hunter, executive vice president at AGY, in the release. “By incorporating S2 Glass fiber into Nylon PA 12, we are delivering a breakthrough material solution for demanding applications.”
Orion Compounding Director of Business Development Ryan Divens said, “Working alongside AGY, we have developed a material that provides superior mechanical strength with the added benefit of transparency when needed. This S2 Glass fiber PA 12 will allow customers to design parts with both high performance and unique visual properties.”
AGY manufactures specialty glass fibers that enable high-performance composites for applications integral to civilian life and critical to the national security supply chain. These applications include aviation, defense, electronics, artificial intelligence, digital connectivity, and architecture.
“Flexible production operations, R&D teams, and a product innovation center allow AGY to customize material solutions and develop next-generation products for clients globally,” the company said in the release.
Orion Compounding develops custom-engineered thermoplastic compounds designed to meet the most demanding performance requirements across a wide range of industries, including automotive, aerospace, medical, and consumer goods.
“With a focus on innovation, flexibility, and customer collaboration, Orion delivers high-quality, tailored solutions that enhance material performance and support advanced product development,” the release stated.
